Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts is fast becoming the world’s fastest growing sport. Mixed Martial Arts combines all the different style fighters and fight techniques such as wrestling, karate, Jujutsu, boxing, street fighting to name a few.
The sports popularity has taken off and the biggest and most popular mma organization is The Ultimate Fighting Championship also known as the UFC. When the UFC first started there were not many rules to abide by and did not even have weight classes the sport was viewed by many as barbaric and most banned across some states. Rule changes led mixed martial arts into being a sport and established weight classes a to protect the fighters, the term tapout is refer to when an opponent is put into a submission and will tap the opponent with his hand a signal to the referee that he has surrended.
The early days of the UFC you would see a lot of bar room type fighters like Tank Abbot who were tough but did not train as a fighter. Todays fighters are mostly full time fighters who treat their fighting as profession and train on a daily basis. Todays fighter must be well versed in all style of fighting and learn to combat each style.
What has also made the UFC popular is the actual stage the fight is fought on called the Octagon. The ring shaped like an Ocatagon. In between rounds you will see pretty ring girls as you see in boxing matches.
Some of the other mixed martial arts organaztions include the WEC, Elite XC, and Pride fighting to name some of the top organaziotns, there are several more less known local and national MMA organaztions.

My brother watched UFC all the time. Exciting to see and the power, energy, the rush they possessed. Very entertaining but on the long run it makes you sad. For me it makes me sad. They are entertaining but through painful exhibitions. Still it is a clean work. I hope for their good health.
It was the genius of the UFC to transform MMA into more of a mainstream sport, so politicians and other pain-in-the-ass type people couldn’t so easily knock it or associated with things like ‘cock fighting’.
Thank god for the UFC, they brought MMA out of the dog house and into the spotlight.
UFC and MMA generally are getting massive in the U.K. now, but we still have a big problem with local government politicians, who think it should be prohibited. I’ve been to a few Mixed Martial Arts tournaments and the atmosphere is always really good. The fighters themselves seem very disciplined. They are proper sportsmen and I really think this kind of activity can transform people, from thugs into self-controlled men.
UFC made the world of MMA today, I miss the one night tournament being used during the early days of UFC, it proves how tough a warrior every octagon combatant is.
You should add Frank Edgar to that lightweights list. Dude is the champ now and is a total badass.
I enjoy watching all types of sport fighting and mixed martial arts. I know one thing that the UFC did for the public, is that it gave us something more active and reliable to find entertainment in besides, say, heavyweight boxing. I remember back in the day, how exciting it was to watch a heavyweight championship match from people like Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield, etc. But… Professional boxing has slowly dwindled away over the last several years, as the UFC has climbed to the top. Cheers!
Mixed martial arts are great to watched! I love watching this game especially when my favorite character is playing… This is great that you shared us this lists! This is pretty neat..Anyway, thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next one!!!
Your right, MMA is a very fast growing sport. I use to be a big fan of boxing but boxing seems so boring campared to MMA fighting. A friend of mine is a professional MMA fighter and I am a big fan of the sport.

Great to see this post on MMA, since the original post, there have been quite a few changes regarding the organisations able to compete with the UFC and survive. Pride and Strikeforce have been put to rest. As an avid MMA fan, it would be nice to see fighters being able to cross from one organisation to another or have the champs from each organisation fight each other….
Did you see last week-end’s UFC?
Diaz beat up BJ Penn, seems BJ is considering retirement. Just wanted to say thanks BJ for all the exciting fights you have given us over the years, your legacy will always be there!
